Power to Achieve Award
LDA Vancouver, through a private donation, has been provided the
unique opportunity to create the annual Power to Achieve award
and gift. This award recognizes individuals who have made remarkable
voluntary contributions towards the advancement of education,
social development, legal rights, health and/or general well-being
of children with learning disabilities.
The award is presented each year at the Speaking of Kids conference.
How it Works
Anyone can nominate a person whom they feel has made a remarkable
contribution in the field of learning disabilities. All nominations
must meet the criteria set out on the nomination form.
At the end of September the Award committee reviews all nominations
and the winner of the Award is notified.
S/he receives two complimentary tickets to the Speaking of Kids
conference. At the conference the winner is presented with a commemorative
plaque, and a cash gift of up to $500 – the gift is designated
in the recipient’s name to support an LDAV program or service
of his/her choice. This gift is in the form of a bursary (e.g.
Recipient’s name Bursary Fund).
2009 Power to Achieve Winner
We are happy to announce the well-deserving recipient of the Power
to Achieve award for 2009 is Frances Kelly. Frances is a lawyer
at Vancouver Community Legal Assistance Society, a non-profit
law group that provides legal assistance to individuals who are
physically, mentally, socially, economically or otherwise disadvantaged.
Frances is an exceptional person who has personally overcome many
challenges. Thank you, Frances, for leveling the playing field
for those who daily face insurmountable hurdles.
How Can you Nominate Someone?
This is your chance to honour someone you know who has made a
difference in the lives of our kids – what a wonderful opportunity
to express your gratitude.

Butterfly Effect Campaign
The Butterfly Effect Campaign is based on the phrase “Butterfly
Effect” - indicating that the tiniest of actions can have
a momentous result. Something as simple as the flap of a butterfly
wing, when magnified over time and space can change the weather
pattern across the globe.
We started the Butterfly Effect campaign in 2006 by selling Brian
the Butterfly pins only in the Learning Disabilities Association
Vancouver’s service areas. It was a very well-received,
so we expanded the distribution to across BC in 2008. With all
the chapters in BC involved in the Butterfly Campaign, we were
able to magnify the butterfly effect – what a great success!
London Drugs
This year, we have implemented a new phase in the Butterfly Effect
Campaign: Reusable shopping cart coin-key chains.
The keep-a-coin key chain consists of a set of two tockens shaped
as a loonie and a quarter to be used in shopping cart slots. Just
think - no more struggling to find change for a shopping cart
as you always have it on hand with the Brian the Butterfly Coin
Keychain! Visit your local London Drugs store through the months
of November and December to get your very own keep-a-coin keychain!
Blenz Outlets
The Blenz Cares program saw Brian the Butterfly pins sold at participating
Blenz store outlets in BC through the month of October (national
learning disabilities awareness month). This is the second year
in a row that Blenz stores have shown their support of kids in
BC.
100% of the proceeds from every butterfly pin and coin-key chain
sold stays in the area it was sold.
Imagine proving that a little change can have a big result - join
the butterfly effect by purchasing a key chain and/or pin.
